An Outstanding Class Teacher Yan Feng from School of Civil Engineering and Architecture

Yan Feng, a doctor-degree holder of Han nationality, is a member of the Democratic League and full-time teacher of TU School of Civil Engineering and Architecture. He presided over 1 industry-school cooperative education project of Ministry of Education, 1 "14th Five-Year Plan" Teaching Reform Research Project of Zhejiang Province, 1 project of Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation, 1 construction research project of Zhejiang Provincial Construction Department, and 1 project of Taizhou Science and Technology Plan. He has published 5 EI or SCI papers included as the first author; participated in the compilation of 1 provincial standard; has 3 authorized utility model patents and 1 appearance patent; He presided over or participated in horizontal research projects with a total amount of nearly 1.5 million yuan; Guided the students to participate in one national innovation project, two provincial new seedling projects and won many provincial A-level competitions.

Since his assuming the post of class teacher of 2017 architecture, he has been adhering to moral first and teaching by words and deeds, creating a " teacher-student growth community", and nurturing application-oriented architectural design talents featuring a complete collection of essential qualities including basic skills, practical ability, comprehensive quality, adaptability and development potential.


Establish Class Motto and Foster Learning

With the class motto of "Building foundation, integrating knowledge with practice", Yan created an application-oriented class. He urged and guided his students to make five-year college life and annual development plans. He encouraged his students to develop their respective paths by giving them books with a message on the title page.


Build Teams for Growth

He encouraged students to establish various study groups on such activities as English test, curriculum, scientific research competitions, extracurricular activities, etc., for the learning effect and class cohesion. Besides, he supported them to take the lead in building architecture societies, holding architecture salons, organizing postgraduate entrance examination exchange meetings, and encouraging cross-grade and cross-professional learning exchanges. In 2019, he guided the acoustic research team to win the provincial New Talent Plan and applied for two national utility model invention patents.


Hold Exhibitions to Promote Exchange

He also organized and supported his students to hold an architectural work exhibition in 2019, displaying 10-meter copy painting, sketch, watercolor, model, computer drawing, architectural photography and other works both inside and outside the school. It won an extensive praise for quality and considerate arrangement. At the invitation of Taizhou Library, the exhibition was held in the city library, attracting a total number of 5,000 visitors.


                            Revitalize the Countryside

He actively guided and led his students to participate in social practice, serve local communities and revitalize countryside. Between 2017 and 2020, students of 2017 Architecture have served more than 100 times in the local communities. The practical projects they participated in totaled nearly ten million yuan, with more than four thousand hours of service and a total mileage of over ten thousand kilometers.

In the summer of 2019, in the project of courtyard renovation and industrial planning for Huangshitan Village, Kuocang Town, Yan stayed in the village together with his students and completed the renovation projects, such as starry sky wall painting, wine hall painting, bamboo pavilion building, art stone wall, etc., and completed the Huangshitan industrial planning of "Meaningful and Elegant Yellow Stone" according to local conditions.

In the summer of 2020, Yan guided his students to participate in the space renovation project of Wangjia Village, Lanxi City, Jinhua City. Within 32 days in the village, the team members were devoted to executing the project from repeated reviewing the plan to assisting the purchase of raw materials, the construction of the project and coordinating the relationship between all parties, the project team members finally transformed a chicken nest into a quaint tea room Bailumin (literally means White Deer Tea).

With clear goals and reasonable methods, class of 2017 Architecture has made substantial progress in all aspects over the past few years, including 66.7% of the passing rate of band 4, and 100% of the participation rate of social practice and competition. Since entering the school, students in the class have won 2 national utility model invention patents, 2 prizes in national discipline competitions, 9 prizes in provincial disciplines and scientific research competitions, and more than 40 prizes in municipal competitions. The class was awarded the " Class with Excellent Academic Style" in 2019-2020 academic year, and the League branch was awarded the "Excellent League Branch of Universities in Zhejiang Province" in the second College League Branch Style Exhibition Contest. The employment rate of the class reached 94%. Among them, 4 students were admitted to University of Tokyo, University of Nottingham, Shenzhen University, Suzhou University of Science and Technology and other universities for further study.
