Opening ceremony for new international students held

On the afternoon of September 20, Taizhou University held the opening ceremony for the international students of the year 2023 in the International Conference Hall of the Jiaojiang Campus. Professor Le Chuanyong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and President of Taizhou University, attended the ceremony and gave a speech. Leaders from the Exit-Entry Administration of Taizhou Public Security Bureau, such as He Chenggang, Director of the bureau, and Liang Yan, Deputy Director, as well as representatives from relevant functional departments and secondary schools attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Li Junmin, Member of the CPC Committee and Vice President of Taizhou University.

On behalf of the university, President Le Chuanyong warmly welcomed the arrival of international students. He pointed out that the new students attending the opening ceremony came from 27 countries, including Bangladesh, Morocco, Pakistan, Zambia, Mongolia, Thailand, Nepal, Burkina Faso, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. These countries have had frequent and close exchanges with China throughout history. At the ceremony, he introduced the historical culture and economic characteristics of Taizhou, a port city, as well as the academic achievements of Taizhou University as the highest institution of learning in Taizhou. Finally, President Le expressed his earnest expectations for the students: first, “adaptive.” He hopes that they can quickly integrate into the learning and living atmosphere of Taizhou University, abide by Chinese laws and regulations, and become part of the university. Secondly, “aim-oriented.” He hopes that they can set goals, stimulate interest, acquire knowledge, master skills in their studies, and become planned individuals. Thirdly, “assistance.” He hopes that they can help each other in life, make progress together in their studies, and improve themselves through cooperation. Fourthly, “aggressive.” He hopes that they can pursue breakthroughs in vision, knowledge, and abilities, and strive to become high-quality and professional international talents. Fifthly, “achievement.” He hopes that they can learn Chinese well, master professional knowledge, become friendly “ambassadors” promoting communication between countries, and become a “bridge” for mutual learning and understanding between Chinese and foreign civilizations.

Shen Hongcheng, the teacher representative from the School of Business, encouraged students to learn more about Taizhou and China during their study here, to take on major responsibilities for building a “global village", to focus on professional learning and bravely explore the future, and to express gratitude to teachers, elders, and friends. He believed that their experience at Taizhou University would be an asset and an unforgettable memory in their lives. Wang Meili and An Peng spoke on behalf of all the senior and new students respectively, sharing their feelings about studying and living in Taizhou and expressing their expectations for the future and blessings to all international students.

After the opening ceremony, the International School organized the “Inaugural Lesson”of the orientation education for freshmen, which included lectures on Chinese immigration, border inspection, traffic safety laws and regulations, drug prohibition, and fraud prevention. Inspiring cases and detailed explanations inspired all international students.

It is reported that in this academic year, Taizhou University received applications from 392 students and admitted 147 of them, with an admission rate of 37.5%. The number of enrolled students has exceeded 330, including the existing 241 students and the 92 students who have already registered. These students are studying in these programs such as international economics and trade, computer science and technology, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, and biopharmaceutics. This year, the university started admitting master’s degree students for the first time. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students are mainly degree students, distributed in the two campuses of Linhai and Jiaojiang. There have been significant breakthroughs in enrollment scale, level, and structure, enriching campus culture and effectively promoting the internationalization of education at the university.
