Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory for Island Green Energy and New Materials inaugurated

The inauguration ceremony of the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory for Island Green Energy and New Materials (hereafter called “the Laboratory”) and its first Academic Committee meeting were held at TU’s Jiaojiang Campus on April 26. Yue Chuanyong, President and Deputy Secretary of the CPC TU Committee, delivered opening remarks. He was joined by distinguished attendees including Wang Zhicheng (Director of Taizhou Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology), Vice President Han Deman, Academic Committee Chair Lu Jun (Qiushi Distinguished Professor of Zhejiang University), representatives from co-founding enterprises Zhejiang Sunpro Power and Zhejiang Sanyuan Longxing Technology Co., Ltd., as well as officials from Yuhuan and Huangyan science bureaus. The event was hosted by Jin Yanxian, Director of TU’s Scientific Research Department.

In his address, Yue Chuanyong underscored the Laboratory’s mission to align with national strategies and regional development needs. Rooted in the “Dachen Island Reclamation Spirit” and leveraging Taizhou’s natural advantages in island green energy, the Laboratory aims to address critical challenges in building self-sustaining energy systems for island environments. He stated that this initiative embodies the Laboratory’s commitment to technological innovation and talent cultivation in service of the nation.

Yue outlined four strategic priorities for the Laboratory:

Frontier Research: Pursue groundbreaking studies in line with global scientific trends and national strategic demands.

Open Collaboration: Forge partnerships with domestic and international institutions to create an open innovation ecosystem.

Application-Driven Impact: Accelerate the translation of research into real-world solutions to boost regional development.

Talent Cultivation: Nurture young scientists with global vision through high-impact projects and interdisciplinary synergy.

Academic Committee Appointments

Subsequently, appointment letters were issued to the Academic Committee members, including Vice Chairs Zhong Wenwu and Jin Yanxian, alongside renowned scholars such as Meng Guowen, Wang Xun, and Huang Xiaoqing.

Laboratory Director Professor Wang Jiacheng presented progress and plans, highlighting focus areas like island renewable energy development, high-efficiency energy storage materials, and hydrogen technologies. He affirmed that the Laboratory’s goal is to establish a nationally leading innovation hub for green energy.

The agenda featured an academic lecture by Peng Chengjun (Editorial Director of East China Normal University Press) on scholarly publishing norms, followed by research updates from young scientists Li Gongqiang, Shen Shijie, and Du Peng. Academic Committee members later engaged in rigorous discussions on institutional governance, technology transfer, and long-term development strategies.

Panel discussions

The members of the academic committee conducted in-depth discussions on key topics such as the management system of the key laboratory, the transformation of scientific research results, and medium- and long-term development goals, and provided valuable suggestions on the development strategy and planning of the key laboratory from the perspectives of demand orientation, research direction, cooperation and sharing, and talent team construction.

Approved in July 2024, the Laboratory operates under China’s “Ocean Power” strategy to address island energy sustainability. The event marked a tripartite collaboration among government, academia, and industry, injecting momentum into green energy and materials research. Moving forward, the Laboratory will evolve into an integrated platform for innovation, interdisciplinary synergy, high-end talent development, and industrial application.
