A first aid training seminar themed “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Proper Use of Defibrillators” for international students was successfully held at the Student Activity Center on Jiaojiang Campus on April 8th. Zhang Xiaoyou, Deputy Director of the University Health Clinic and a Level Two Emergency Rescue Practitioner certified by the Zhejiang Red Cross Society, served as the keynote speaker. Over 90 international students and 5 volunteers from School of Medicine participated in the event.
Zhang emphasized that time is of great importance in saving lives. There would be a chance to save someone experiencing cardiac arrest within the critical four-minute window if more people could master the basic skills of CPR. During the seminar, she explained the theoretical knowledge and operational procedures of CPR and defibrillators, and demonstrated the techniques in slow motion.
Those international students present were divided into groups for on-site simulation exercises. Under the guidance of teachers and volunteers, they conducted chest compression and artificial respiration methodically, gradually becoming familiar with the procedures. “1001, 1002, 1003…”, a Mozambican student with Chinese name Ma Yun was learning how to assess the victim’s condition using the “thousand-one, thousand-two” counting method. “Breath should take one second, you’re blowing too fast,” a Bangladeshi student with Chinese name Suman anxiously reminded his fellow students learning artificial respiration. With high enthusiasm, everyone sat in groups around the volunteers, actively asking questions, engaging in intense discussions with other students, creating a lively atmosphere, and expressing their full satisfaction with the learning experience.
The aim of this seminar was to deepen the life education of international students, cultivate their judgment ability, risk awareness, and altruistic spirit, and allow them to realize the value of life. With this doing, they would understand how to protect themselves, care for others, take on social responsibilities proactively, and promote comprehensive physical and mental health development.
