“I am a reclamation team member. I volunteer to come to Dachen Island. Facing China’s ocean, backed by China’s mountains and rivers, footing on the front line of sea defense, shouldering people’s hope, we swear...” clanging oath resounded through TU Assembly Hall, with thunderous applause for a long time.
Since September 6th, the large-scale drama “YOUTH—MEET” by TU has been staged in the Assembly Hall of Jiaojiang Campus more than ten times. University leaders such as Zhu Jian, Le Chuanyong, Li Junmin, Lou Danqun, Han Deman, Xiang Fengri, Li Jianjun, Ding Yizhi, and Cai Haijiang, along with representatives from various functional departments and heads of secondary schools, have attended and watched the performance. Over 8,000 teachers and students have “experienced” the struggles and achievements of the reclamation and construction efforts of the past years together with the performers. The wonderful performance left a profound impact on the audience. The play has garnered widespread attention from outside the campus. Leaders and guests from the Publicity Department of Taizhou Municipal Party Committee, Taizhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports, as well as representatives from Taizhou Vocational and Technical College and Taizhou Vocational College of Science and Technology, were invited to watch the performance on campus. They highly praised the live performance.
Drama performance
“YOUTH—MEET” has been inspired by the reclamation deeds at Dachen Island. Teachers and students from TU served as the writing team. Based on the university’s compilation of historical facts about the reclamation and theoretical interpretation of the reclamation spirit, the production skillfully intertwines the “mobile ideological and political classroom” of TU with the reclamation deeds of the first batch of volunteer youth who landed on the island in 1956. It uses techniques such as flashbacks and temporal and spatial interweaving. Through the vivid presentation of segments such as “teaching ideological and political courses on Dachen Island,” “reclamation team members fighting against typhoons,” “dialogues with veteran reclamation team members,” “revisiting the reclamation oath,” and “striving to be reclamation pioneers in the new era,” it vividly narrates the reclamation spirit of the older generation of reclamation pioneers, who nurtured the island with their youth and sweat, as well as the belief and determination of contemporary college students to uphold the reclamation spirit, inherit the revolutionary spirits, and carry forward this spirit from generation to generation.
During the nearly one-hour performance, the student and teacher actors and actresses, with their abundant emotions, exquisite acting skills, and infectious dialogues, triggered a strong emotional resonance among the audience and received widespread acclaim. Since the initiation of play creation and rehearsals in May this year, relevant departments and secondary schools such as the university’s Publicity Department, Youth League Committee, School of Humanities, School of Teacher Education, and School of Art and Design have jointly organized a team consisting of students and teachers. They continuously refined the script, upgraded the stage design, and conducted numerous trainings. The performance this time marked a splendid debut of the drama.
Zhu Jian talks with the drama writing team
After watching the performance, Zhu Jian had an in-depth exchange with the drama writing team. He said that General Secretary Xi Jinping attaches great importance to the inheritance and promotion of the wasteland-reclamation spirit of Dachen. He went to the island and wrote to reclamation members twice. The play “YOUTH—MEET” is an important initiative of TU to implement the task of moral education and promote the wasteland-reclamation spirit of Dachen. “A drama is a vivid ideo-political lesson”, said Zhu Jian. He advised the drama team to continue to carry forward the spirit of the wasteland-reclamation spirit of Dachen by performing online and offline.
