Professor Luo Jianbo discussing the “History, Present, and Future of International Chinese Education”
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Luo Jianbo briefly introduced Fudan University’s International Cultural Exchange School. He noted that the School of Humanities at Taizhou University also focuses on Chinese language and Chinese education as its main specialties, making the two schools highly compatible in this regard, which provides a foundation for future cooperation.
Next, Professor Luo started from the evolution of the term “国际中文教育 (International Chinese Education)” to briefly introduce the development history of International Chinese Education and shared the early practices of international education at Fudan University and the development journey of its International Cultural Exchange School.
Subsequently, Luo pointed out some existing problems and shortcomings in modern International Chinese Education, namely, an excessive focus on language learning in teaching, neglect of cultural cultivation, and insufficient student language proficiency. He emphasized that the fundamental difference between people lies in their judgment ability, which stems from long-term reading and thinking. He particularly pointed out that literature and art, as cultural carriers that can transcend language barriers, are effective ways to enhance students’ comprehensive literacy, and advocated for a deeper integration of literary classics into International Chinese Education.
Finally, Professor Luo Jianbo stated that International Chinese Education is not only a professional endeavor but also closely linked to the strategic needs of national cultural dissemination, carrying an important historical mission. It is a great cause worthy of the efforts of all practitioners.
