On June 5, Professor Jin Ya from Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, at the invitation of the School of Humanities, gave a lecture titled “Towards Beauty: Aesthetic Interest and Life” in Classroom 1106. The talk, as part of the university’s initiative to cultivate correct aesthetic values and explore the connection between aesthetic education and personal growth, was hosted by Chen Nan, head of the Taizhou University Literary Theory Team, and was well attended by faculty and students.

The event opened with a book donation ceremony. Library Director Wu Shiyong and Dean Luo Zhengming expressed gratitude to Professor Jin for her generous donation of books, which will enrich the library’s collection and fill gaps in subject-specific literature.

Professor Jin centered her lecture on the concept of “interest” (qu) in Chinese aesthetics, systematically tracing the lineage of aesthetic thought and clearly articulating her advocacy for a “life-oriented aesthetics,” offering fresh perspectives for implementing aesthetic education in universities. She analyzed four dimensions of aesthetic experience: sensory awakening, vitality of life, levels of taste, and value judgement. With rich examples ranging from classical poetry to contemporary everyday practices, she integrated aesthetic theory with lived experience, encouraging students to rediscover overlooked beauty in their surroundings.

During a lively Q&A session, Professor Jin responded to students’ aesthetic queries and reflections. She emphasized that aesthetic education is not an added obligation but a practice anyone can begin at any time. In an age of information overload, maintaining sensitivity and focus on beauty is a vital spiritual capacity.

This lecture was a key component of the School of Humanities’ “nurturing through beauty” series. In her closing remarks, Professor Jin encouraged students with the words: “In this world, one can become what one ought to become, and should aspire to become.” The school will continue to invite distinguished scholars to campus, building bridges between aesthetic education and professional training, helping students cultivate their minds and enrich their lives through aesthetic experience.
