Honor Student: Chen Yunlu, from Class 1, Math (normal) of 2019

Chen Yunlu never takes any chance in professional learning. In her opinion, there is no accidental success or wasted efforts. The study of mathematics is not accomplished overnight; it needs accumulating knowledge in the usual way, and frequent summarizing. Chen said difficulties were inevitable in the process of learning, and whenever she felt confused about some problems, she would consult her teachers. In order to achieve better learning effects, she formed a study group with her friends to share learning experiences and offset their weaknesses in a targeted way. They supervised each other and progressed together.

Time does not favor anyone; it gives everyone twenty-four hours in a day. Chen knew the value of time and never procrastinated in her study. She said that if you wanted to improve efficiency and made full use of your time, you needed a motivation. Every time there is a learning task, Chen would immediately put it into action. Her efforts yielded fruitful results: she ranked the first in her class for three consecutive years in both intellectual education performance and comprehensive evaluation. Moreover, she was awarded scholarships by the state for the academic year of 2021, the provincial government, and TU, and won honorary titles including the "Merit Student" and "Active Member of Study" of the school.

Passion is the most powerful drive to push a person forward. It is with passion for mathematics that Chen participated in math competitions. "It was an unforgettable experience interwoven with tears and joy," Chen recalled. The contest was so difficult and intensive that Chen and her teammates often had to sit up late in the night preparing for it. The most dramatic was that she and her teammates would fall asleep even while sitting down. And then they woke each other up and resumed training. Once, in order to catch up with the progress of the competition, she took a break in an empty classroom on a cold winter night and was woken up by the cold after sleeping for an hour or two. These became the most memorable encounters in Chen's college life.

The bigger challenge for Chen was to set up and maintain a good competition team rather than the physical training. She was led by her seniors in the competition at the beginning, but she improved so rapidly through contests that she soon could form her own team. Chen gathered courage to invite her classmates and succeeded. Giving up halfway or disbanding the team happened from time to time in a competition, which Chen was worried about. But the encouragement and persistence of her teammates gave Chen Yunlu courage and confidence. She said that although everyone in the team was once confused and wanted to quit, they managed to persevere to the end for the sake of benefits of the whole team, no matter how difficult it was. In the end, Chen's team won the Honorable Mention Award in the 2022 U.S. Collegiate Mathematical Modeling Competition, and the second prize in the 13th National University Mathematics Competition (Mathematics B category).

Chen is a lively and lovely girl with passion for life. She enjoys sharing interesting stories, and has endless topics to talk about when getting together with like-minded friends. Chen enhances mutual understanding and develops friendship with others through communication. When encountering any problem, she will ask her friends for help. She said her security came from her friends. Likewise, she gives her friends as much help as she can. She is also a "foodie" and will be the first one to try any new food that comes out. She also likes reading novels, in which she "feels the stories that cannot be experienced in life and appreciate the splendor of the literary world".

Life is education, and education is life. "To become a mathematics teacher and realize the value of life in teaching." This was Chen’s original aspiration when she came to TAIEX and chose Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Teacher Training) as her major. Now in her senior year, she still holds the dream of being a math teacher. She said she was grateful for her hard work in the past and would live up to her expectations in future. When it comes to graduation, Chen hopes she can realize the dream since her childhood: to become an excellent teacher and make students' lives colorful; to become the backbone of her family and take her parents on a trip across the country.
