Honor Student Hong Jiali, from Class of Rehabilitation Therapeutics of 2019

Hong Jiali, majoring in Rehabilitation therapeutics, is the winner of the National Scholarship in 2021 academic year. She is a veritable "harvester" of scholarships. She has won the first-class scholarship of the university for three consecutive years, the "Merit Student" of the university, the Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship twice, and the Ideological and political scholarship of the university and the Enze Scholarship of the Medical School. "If you do it, why don't you do it better? Be worthy of your time and effort." With such a positive attitude, Hong lived her college life to the fullest.

Studying medicine is extensively considered a tough path to negotiate, but Hong enjoys it. She chose rehabilitation therapy because she likes the profession and is optimistic about its career prospects. For other students, the learning process may be distracted by the temptations of the outside world, but Hong makes an exception. She said: "There is no shortcut to learning and you have to be down to earth. Sincerity is a must and basic knowledge is important. Only by laying a good foundation is it possible to achieve surpassing in the future!"

In terms of study, she requires herself to listen carefully in class and consolidate knowledge by doing more exercises after class. In her opinion, learning mainly lies in the accumulation, "Read through thousands of volumes and then writing as God! Don't cram at the last minute, you won't be able to hold on.” Hong Jiali said. With respect to the study method, she advocates the use of mind maps to sort out knowledge points: "Mind maps are really good. Do not put everything down, but see that point spread out and memorize them.” In addition to professional learning, Hong also pays attention to reading extracurricular books to expand her horizons and consolidate her knowledge.

After receiving the national-level scholarship, Hong expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying that it is not only a recognition and affirmation of her efforts during her college years, but also a spur to keep in mind that "if you do not advance, you will fall back", so she will continue to work hard in future.

When it comes to her university life, she likes to challenge herself in the areas she has never been involved in before, such as speech and debate.

When she entered the university, her class organized a three-minute speech for her classmates in the morning study session. Hong Jiali who had no experiences was so nervous that she felt resistant to deliver a speech to the watchful eyes of her classmates for the fear that there will be off-script forget words, or occurrence of incoherent and other embarrassing scenes. But she eventually managed to convince herself to take the first step bravely, and accumulated experiences and built confidence from her imperfect expressions time and again.

In her sophomore year, she was encouraged by her classmates to participate in the college's debate competition. She worked closely with her team, studied the debate topic, collected information and conducted mock drills. In the debate arena, she argued heatedly with others and finally won the title of "Best debater". From the initial resistance to stand on the podium to eloquently speak in front of the crowd, the accumulation of experience finally enabled her to become a confident girl on the debate field. "Don’t be a bookworm. Try cultivating diversified interests, Study is necessary indeed, but tests that challenge cerebral and verbal capacities are beneficial to the development of comprehensive quality, too. And once you determine to do it, do your best."

Hong said that her greatest progress in college was her language skills, which not only helped her to express her thoughts and needs in front of people, but also taught her "Do not flinch because of fear for what is scary is not failure itself, but never give it a try. Opportunity is reserved to those who are prepared".

To become a rehabilitation therapist has been Hong’s dream. In order to realize it, apart from learning professional knowledge to strengthen her foundation, she also explores other opportunities to increase her abilities, such as obtaining a first aid certificate, participating in the national AIDS prevention knowledge competition and winning the second prize, and leading the team to participate in the college's "Internet+" competition as the project leader of the "Fixed Splint Folding First Aid Kit" and winning the first prize, etc. All these further improved her comprehensive quality.

As a senior, she is currently interning in a hospital to for more clinical practice. For an intern like her, it is a considerable test on how to turn theoretical knowledge into practical ability. "There are tons of differences between theories in textbooks and actual operation. After all, patients are not sick completely as stated in books, and healing recovery and self-expectations vary from person to person." During the internship, Hong also found that many patients do not understand the rehabilitation treatment, thus unwilling to cooperate with medical staff. It tests the rehabilitation therapists’ skills to communicate with the patients. "Hospital work is more tedious than I have thought. Patients are not a wooden man. It is important to develop feelings so that they believe you, rather than just exercise and rehabilitation ", Hong lamented.

Faced with two paths of graduate school and work, Hong chose to enter the workplace first. Sinking her heart and soul into the workplace, and steadily improving her professional skills, that is her plan. "Since you have made up your mind, you can't give up halfway. Be responsible for every decision you make, do what you should do, and leave the rest to the time. Future is determined by every effort in the present moment."

"A nine-story platform starts from the ground." This is her motto. She will continue to be down-to-earth, forging ahead on the path of becoming an excellent rehabilitation therapist.
