Huang Wenjie, from Class 3, Polymer 19, is the winner of the National Scholarship in 2021 academic year. She is strict with herself, constantly pursues excellence, and hones herself and improves herself all the way.
It's not easy to stay at the top of the class in intellectual achievement for three consecutive years, but Huang Wenjie did that. One of her key factors is that she maintained a mind that is eager to learn. "It is important to keep curious in learning. The more you don't understand, the more you want to figure out." When encountering difficulties, Huang would search relevant video resources via internet or watch it repeatedly to clarify his thoughts. If he still couldn’t manage it by himself, he would consult his teachers till it was sorted out. It is with this desire for knowledge and tenacity that she has achieved steady progress.
"Regular review and timely reflection" is Huang's learning secret. After completion of each section, she will summarize and reflect by asking herself questions as follows: what have I learnt? What yet not? How should I avoid such problems next time? Through reflection, she kept making progress and gradually learnt to think deeply. Instead of be limited to fragmented contents, she jumped out of the shallow knowledge to explore deeper logic, and master a more comprehensive and systematic knowledge system.” Science develops with each passing day. Only by keeping thinking all the time can we make discoveries and progress." Huang put it this way.
Apart from learning from textbooks, Huang also attaches importance to practice. She improves her ability and consolidate her professional knowledge through experiments and competitions. When the university held the first "Dingli Cup" Competition on polymer Material Experimental Practice for college students, Huang did not hesitate to sign up, because she professional knowledge can be used in this "glue" event. She held that it was interesting and fulfilling to apply the theoretical knowledge to practice and enhance her practical skills. In the end, she won the second prize in the competition.
She has participated in two international "Internet+" college innovation and entrepreneurship competitions in Zhejiang Province. In the sixth competition, her team won the bronze medal, but she did not stop there. One year later, she rechallenged herself by joining a new team. In the process of preparing for the competition, Huang kept improving and innovating the project for making it better. Compared with her performance in the first event, she was calmer and sober. With the guidance of her teachers and the close cooperation of her team members, she finally won the silver medal in the eighth competition. Huang said, "Participating in the competition provided me with a good opportunity to experience something fascinating, widen my horizon and broaden my mind, allowing me to flexibly apply what I have learned and develop my ability of innovation and entrepreneurship. I benefited so much from it."
Besides, she did something amazing in her junior year: she published a paper in Zone II SCI journals as the first author! Behind this proud achievement is her persistence and hard work over the years.
In order to strengthen her professional knowledge and improve her comprehensive ability, she did experiments and conducted researches with her teachers in her sophomore year. With diligence and solid basic knowledge, she has been trusted and valued by her teachers. In the second semester of the year, she, along with some of her classmates, started to study some project under the guidance of her teacher. She was caught between study, competitions and other student activities and could only afford a little time for the experiments, which resulted in a slow progress. In order to advance it, she didn’t return home during the summer vacation after her sophomore year and stayed at school to do experiments.
The experiment was not smooth. She tested the samples and learned that degradation of the experiment did not meet the requirements, and failed though repeatedly tried. But Huang did not give up. She kept optimizing the program with the encouragement and guidance of her supervisor, and finally completed the experiment and finished her thesis at the end of the first semester of her junior year. "Scientific research is a novel and challenging path. If you want to succeed, you need to be patient and withstand setbacks. Hardships and joy go hand in hand. I would like to thank my supervisor for his careful and patient guidance." This is how Huang describes her scientific research.
With passion for scientific research, now she has embarked on the road to preparing for postgraduate entrance examination. She said that she hoped to further her study in the field of materials and devoted herself to related research work in future. "Grasp opportunities and meet challenges." This is the encouragement and expectation Huang has cherished to herself in her university life. She will consistently pursue her dream with indomitable courage and perseverance on the road to future!
